Healthy BBQ Sauce Ingredients
This homemade bbq sauce is made using tomato passata rather than ketchup and contains only 2 tablespoons of added sugar. I used a small amount of Marmite for its salty, intensely savoury flavour which adds depth, complexity as well as goodness to the sauce.
You absolutely cannot taste the Marmite in this sauce! What you will taste is a tangy, rich sauce with deliciously warm smoky notes.
Step-by-step recipe instructions
1.Heat up the oil, add the onion and sugar and stir.
2. Cook slowly for about 6 minutes to caramelise the onions stirring often.
3. Then simply add the rest of the ingredients and bring to the boil.
4. Lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes stirring frequently to prevent the sauce from sticking to the pan.
5. Remove from the heat, puree until smooth and adjust the seasoning if needed. Set aside to cool completely then transfer into a jar or bowl, cover and refrigerate for up to a week.
How much sauce will I get

Sounds great I’m going to try it but why isn’t it suitable to freeze?
Monika says
I froze one batch and it didn't taste exactly the same after defrosting. That's why. But I know that people freeze bbq sauce, perhaps I should give it another go.

My husband loves barbecue sauce but hates Marmite. I can imagine the depth of flavour it adds to the sauce so will have to try this!
