This Chocolate Hazelnut Spread (Healthy) is made using only 4 ingredients. It’s vegan, low in sugar, made without coconut or maple syrup and tastes absolutely delicious!
CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT SPREAD (HEALTHY)
Chocolate and hazelnuts make a fantastic flavour duo, suitable for all sorts of desserts. (See for instance my easy Flourless Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies I made some time ago).
Which is why we love Nutella so much!
Except that commercially produced Nutella isn’t exactly very healthy, quite the opposite actually.
So I’ve come up with a healthier chocolate hazelnut spread alternative that tastes similar, contains much less sugar and only 4 ingredients! It does not contain any dairy or coconut, maple syrup or honey.
Apart from the obvious main ingredient – hazelnuts – this chocolate hazelnut spread recipe contains cacao powder, icing sugar and a bit of vegetable oil for an extra glossy finish.
So it’s vegan plus gluten free!
I avoided having to roast and remove the skin from the hazelnuts by simply using ready blanched hazelnuts. Just add these into the blender along with the other ingredients and puree!
As for the cacao, you can swap it for cocoa powder if you prefer. I tend to use cacao in my recipes as it’s a little healthier.
I chose to use icing sugar, instead of possibly healthier maple syrup, agave or honey mainly because I didn’t want my spread to have a runny consistency. Also these syrupy ingredients would have affected the flavour and I wanted it to be as close to Nutella as possible.
I used a very moderate amount of sugar in this recipe, but you can increase it to suit your preference.
As for the oil, I recommend adding good quality cold-pressed neutral tasting oil which won’t affect the flavour but will make the spread glossier (you only need 1 tablespoon). I recommend using good vegetable oil, such as rapeseed, rather than olive oil.
Now I am sure you are wondering about the consistency of this healthy chocolate hazelnut butter.
It’s very smooth! And creamy! Also slightly runnier than the prototype (i.e. Nutella), a bit like a really thick dip. Certainly spreadable, but also great for dipping (fresh strawberries, apple, breadsticks or banana are good choices).

- 300 grams blanched hazelnuts
- 2.5 tbsp cacao/cocoa powder
- 4 tbsp icing sugar
- 1 tbsp good vegetable oil I used cold pressed rapeseed
Place all the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. If you are using Optimum VAC2 Air Vacuum Blender use the 'Nut' button.
Transfer the spread into a jar, cover and store in the fridge for up to a week.
