Easy Healthy Barbecue Sauce with Marmite
This Easy Healthy Barbecue Sauce is a low carb homemade version of this popular classic. Contains Marmite for extra savouriness and goodness. Rich and delicious, it comes together in 20 minutes!

- 1 medium onion finely chopped
- 1 and 1/2 tbsp light brown sugar
- 2 tbsp vegetable/olive oil
- 1/2 cup tomato passata
- 1 and 1/3 tsp Marmite*
- 1 and 1/3 tbsp cider/white wine vinegar
- 2/3 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
In a saucepan heat up the oil, add the onion and sugar and fry over a low heat for about 10 minutes stirring often. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for a further 10 minutes stirring often to ensure the mixture does not stick to the pan.
Puree the sauce until the mixture is silky smooth.
*If you can't get Marmite (Vegemite) or prefer not to use it you can use dark miso paste instead.
There is no need to add salt as both the Marmite as well as Worcestershire sauce are very salty.
Once cooled, place the barbecue sauce in a jar and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
