This avocado feta toast features smashed avocado topped with creamy whipped feta garnished with scallions and a drizzle of honey to complement the savoury profile of this recipe. Healthy and delicious, perfect for breakfast or as a snack.

This avocado feta toast is a delicious twist on the classic avocado toast. It’s zesty, savoury, and comes with a hint of sweet honey, which works surprisingly well in this recipe.
Avocado toast is extremely versatile and I often make it with cheese, such as ricotta or cottage cheese, for another layer of flavour and a more satisfying meal. Feta cheese, with its bold, salty flavour, makes a particularly delicious pairing with mellow, sweetish avocado. It is also high in protein (as much as 14g in 100g of cheese, while ricotta and cottage cheese each contain 11g), which makes it a perfect breakfast ingredient.
My healthy avocado toast with feta is made by blending the feta until creamy then spreading it over the smashed avocado toast. Pureeing the feta is quick and easy to do and produces fantastic results (and works much better in this recipe than simply crumbling the feta over the avocado). It can also be prepared ahead (see details below) so you can assemble your toast in seconds.
Avocado feta toast ingredients and substitutions
- Avocado: use ripe avocado that’s soft and easy to mash.
- Feta: pat dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture before using.
- Milk: helps to tone down the salty flavour of feta. You can use yogurt instead.
- Scallions/spring onions: use chives instead if preferred.
- Extra virgin olive oil: use to taste.
- Honey: use to taste. Maple syrup does not work as well as honey in this recipe.
- Pepper: you can use multicoloured peppercorns for added flavour (I used green).
- Bread: see details below.
What bread to use
For most toast recipes I usually recommend sourdough or rye bread. However, since feta is salty as well as quite acidic these types of bread are not the best options for this avocado feta recipe.
For best results I recommend using a mellow variety, such as whole wheat/wholemeal bread or white, Italian or French style bread.
Step-by-step recipe instructions
1. Prepare feta: Place the crumbled feta and milk in the small bowl of your food processor and blend until smooth and creamy. The mixture will be thick. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
2. Toast bread: Toast 3 pieces of bread, either in a toaster or using a large pan (butter one side of the toast or drizzle with a little oil then toast for a couple of minutes on each side).
3. Smash avocado: Using a fork smash half the avocado on top of each piece of toast (you can mash the avocado on a separate plate first then spread over the toast).
4. Add feta mixture: Spread 1-2 tablespoons of the whipped feta mixture over each piece of toast and sprinkle with freshly ground pepper.
5. Add honey and oil: Garnish with scallions then drizzle over the oil and honey. Enjoy!
Serving suggestions
This creamy avocado and feta toast is delicious served on its own, but you can also enjoy it with fresh vegetables including sliced cucumber, red pointed sweet peppers and cherry tomatoes for a healthy, delicious Mediterranean-style breakfast.
You can also serve it with poached or fried egg.
Can I prepare the feta ahead
Yes, you can! You can make the whipped feta ahead and keep covered, refrigerated for up to 2 days (for a speedy breakfast I recommend that you do make it ahead).
TIP: If after a while the whipped feta thickens and doesn't spread well add a drop of milk to adjust the consistency before assembling your avocado feta toast.
Optional ingredients you can use
- A pinch of garlic granules (added into the feta mixture).
- Finely chopped mint, basil or oregano leaves (along with the scallions).
- A spoonful of sun-dried tomato pesto (spread over the top).
How to make avocado toast with feta less salty
If you would like to cut the amount of salt in this recipe (feta is famously high in salt) you can combine the feta with mellow ricotta cheese (use ⅔ feta and ⅓ ricotta, drained). You may not need to add any milk.
I do not recommend using yogurt instead as this may produce a runnier consistency, better suited to be used as a dip rather than a spread.
Top tips
- Use ripe and soft avocado that’s easy to mash.
- The feta mixture should be thick and spreadable (but not quite as firm as cream cheese). Make sure you don’t add too much milk (or yogurt) and turn it into a dip.
- The feta can be prepared up to 2 days ahead. Keep covered and refrigerated. If it thickens you can stir in a few drops of milk to adjust the consistency before using.
- Once assembled this avocado feta toast with honey is best served immediately.
- Adjust the amounts of oil and honey to your preference.
- Serve with your favourite bread (not sourdough).
- Not suitable for freezing: I do not recommend freezing the feta mixture as this will change its consistency.
